🌿 I've turned a number of plain notebooks into watercolor journals. The trick is to find one with substantial paper, just the right coating, and not too much buckling.
Emshoi makes an excellent choice if you'd like to paint on pages with dot grid, square grid, or 7mm ruled lines.

I tested gel pens, rollerball pens, fountain pens, technical drawing pens, pigment and dye based markers, highlighters, and watercolors (including scrubbing and layering).
